行く (iku) is plain, 行きます (ikimasu) is polite, いらっしゃいます (irasshaimasu) is honorific: three completely different verb forms for the same action, chosen based on who's being addressed. English collapses every level into one flat sentence, so the social context just disappears.
食べた? (tabeta?) means "did you eat?", but the sentence never actually says "you." Japanese drops pronouns constantly when context makes them obvious, which means a live translation has to supply a subject that the speaker never stated out loud.
